LAFF Announces PHYLM Studios as New Venue for LAFF19

August 12, 2019

Greetings LAFF Audience,

Just under a month away from our 2019 event – originally due to take place from September 19-21 at the ROW DTLA – LA Fashion Festival (LAFF) announces that it will now be hosting the no-cost-admission festival in a new venue that is double the size but still true to our sustainability roots.

We’ve already been leaders in breaking away from the conventional Fashion Week model in Los Angeles; we’re now entering our second edition with this year's theme of sustainability, so our decision to relocate our festival to a new home was a tough but much-needed change. Our new venue, PHYLM Studios, which will host LAFF on September 20 & 21, is located on the outskirts of DTLA. Providing us with a studio backdrop with 12,000 sq. ft. of ready-to-use space, PHYLM Studios allows us to have the lightest possible production footprint and thus hold true to our green manifesto. Coupled with working with organizations like EcoSet – an environmental production resource for creative industries that recirculates production and event materials back into the community – we aim to have a near-zero waste, low carbon footprint festival.

We can all make a difference by re-evaluating our fashion choices, be it to buy secondhand or vintage, repair instead of buying new, or simply by adopting the ethos of “less is more”, but being aware, educated and informed is key to fostering change. LAFF was likewise tasked with taking a hard look in the mirror to ensure our platform and theme did not become “greenwashed.” This led to our upgrade in venue, both in size and brand culture.

Our aim is to showcase sustainable leaders, brands, concepts, and movements with innovative ways of producing and consuming fashion that are mindful of people, the planet, and its resources. LAFF offers an inclusive platform that celebrates the cultural value of film, retail, innovation, and beauty influences, all within the sprawling metropolis of Los Angeles.

Our condensed two-day event packs a punch, featuring ‘LAFF presents Matthew Rolston’s “Hollywood Royale: Out of the School of Los Angeles” by The Mill - a retrospective of Rolston’s work from the 1980s, mostly commissioned for Andy Warhol’s Interview magazine and Jann Wenner’s Rolling Stone. From pop stars to movie stars, TV personalities to socialites, Warhol’s protégé presents a ‘who’s who’ of ‘80s celebrity personalities of the period. From Michael Jackson to Madonna, Prince, George Michael, and Cyndi Lauper, LAFF presents a VR gallery exhibition as our marquee experience paying homage to sustainability while keeping the spotlight shining on the glamour of Hollywood, in partnership with The Technicolor Experience Center.

The two-day program includes daily screenings of fashion films, workshops, installations, masterclasses, pop-ups, lectures, and stimulating experiences from international and local creatives, all taking place at PHYLM Studios on September 20th and 21st. The festival is open to the public at no charge, however, online registration is required.

Stay tuned as we announce our program and open registration on August 26. We hope to see you on set at PHYLM Studios in Downtown Los Angeles!

Creatively yours,
